A biography/family history and portrait of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel C. Kyle, cattleman of Valley Co., MT, is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 992 and 993.
Daniel Cardwell Kyle was born, 25 Jul 1854, Tennessee, but grew up on a farm in Palo Pinto county, Texas. His parents, William and Prudence (Smith) Kyle, went to Texas in 1858. Their only other child, Sarah (Mrs. Conatser) was a twin sister of Daniel. She died in Palo Pinto County, TX, leaving three daughters. There both parents died leaving Daniel C. the sole survivor of the family. On the site of the old Kyle farm, one of the richest oil fields of Texas was opened up but the Kyle family no longer held interest in it.
About 1878, Daniel bought 600 head of cattle from "Lum" Slaughter of Palo Pinto county and took them up to the Panhandle country of TX. He and his wife began ranching on the Salt River, TX, lived there for 8 years, sold the ranch and moved to Secorro county, NM, where they bought a ranch and almost a whole county of land with the proceeds from selling their Texas ranch. Because of droughts, Daniel left NM, shipped everything to Orrin Junction, WY, and brought his possessions to Milk River Country, MT, Oct 1892, where he spent the remainder of his life. He established a ranch east of Saco, MT, and began to run 10,000 cattle. Unfortunately, that winter he lost about 90% of his cattle because of great frosts and freezing temperatures. This wiped out all the savings and profits of the Kyles during their married life. They went to work to rebuild their fortune and clear the $100,000 debt the loss of cattle had caused. He began to raise horses and Hereford cattle, although not as many cattle as before.
Daniel was appointed county commissioner of Valley county, MT, and later served as sheriff.
When Daniel died, 19 Jul 1910, he was one of the wealthy men of the region.
On 17 Mar 1876, Daniel married Miss Mary A. McAdams, daughter of Capt. William C. and Anna (Alexander)McAdams. Capt. William McAdams was stockman of Palo Pinto county, TX. Anna was born in England.
Kyle children: Quinnie L. (Mrs. Allen Shaw, Phillips county, MT); Callie (Mrs. Charlie Peterson, Glasgow, MT); Daniel McAdams (Saco, MT).
