A biography/family history of William Kyle is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 2. William's father, Joseph Kyle, was born in Ireland in 1817, came to the US and located at Council Hill, Illinois. Served for 2-1/2 years as a union soldier then became a pioneer in Austin, Minnesota, where he had a meat market. He died there in 1876. He was married to Mary Ann Alderson, who was born in 1844, of English descent, and died in Austin, Minnesota, 22 Feb 1873. Children: Ida (Mrs. James Harvey), living in Seattle; Frederick B., Austin, MN; Ella (Mrs. Osborn Nutt); Joseph, a railroad employee who died in Spokane; Hester A. (Mrs. William Fitzpatrick), Memphis, TN; William, who was left an orphan at age 4. William attended schools in Austin and at the age of 13 worked as a farm hand in Mower County, MN. In 1892, he located to Montana to take up a homestead near Columbus on the Yellowstone River. Seven years later he left the ranch and worked six years with the Columbus Mercantile Company and then in the grocery business. He was president of the Shane Ditch Company; 1918, elected commissioner for six years; served four years on the City Council. In 1894, Austin, MN, William married Miss M. Minerva Eddy, daughter of W.H. and Abigail Eddy, early settlers and farmers in Mower County, MN. Kyle child: Mary Abigail, b. 5 Apr 1898.
