I am searching for information on my grandfather, Charles Frederick Jones. According to his Social Security records, he was born in a place known as Crossroads in Woodford County, Kentucky on 2 October 1895. His parents were listed as Jess Jones and Minnie Ferguson. He spent most of his life as a steel worker and shipbuilder and died in Mobile, Alabama on 26 October 1967.
My grandfather was estranged from his family as early as the 1920s. The earliest proven record that I have is his marriage to my grandmother, Elsie Lee Kelley, in Birmingham, Alabama in 1928. She never met any of his family and he never talked very much about them.
On a few occasions, he would tell my grandmother and her daughters that he left home at the age of 16 and joined the Army. He allegedly fought in the Mexican Punitive Expedition and later in WWI in the Rainbow Division of the American Expeditionary Force under Gen John J. Pershing. To date, I have not been able to find any military records to confirm his service.
He also mentioned a time or two that he had an older brother named William Wilburn Jones, a younger brother named Calvin Jones, and a younger sister named Mary Jones.
My grandfather said that his parents died young and he was raised by his grandparents. He also stated that his mother, Minnie Ferguson, is buried in Paris, Tennessee.
I have hit nothing but stonewalls in trying to track down any information about his family. I would sincerely appreciate any information on his parents, siblings, or their descendants.
