William McKinley Jones, son of James Jones

Trying to go back thru and validate my genealogy with sources to ensure I have valid information. I can trace my genealogy back to William McKinely Jones, born April 1815, Wayne County. He married Mary Jane "Polly" Baker on 05 April 1838 in Wayne County.

I have his parents listed as James Jones, b. 1797 (in VA or TN, depending on sources) and died 27 JUN 1859, Wayne County. His mother is listed as Maragaret Dobbs and they were married 16 JAN 1813.

I have census records for William from 1850 onward, however I can find no actual proof that lists William as the son of James. It's just been "accepted" over time. Does anyone have or know of any old records (wills, Bibles, birth, etc) that might have this info? Or enough old records that we could infer this information?
