Have you explored the possibility that George might be descended from Green B. Gilpin who was in Bedford County, VA, in the late 1700s, and who apparently was descended from the Gilpins of Alexandria, VA (merchants there ahead of the Revolution)? My gtgtgtgrandfather Richard Brown was born in Alexandria and went to Bedford County apparently because Green Gilpin was there--and Richard later went to Adair County, just over the line from Taylor County--before moving to Illinois.
