--I have worked years and finally conclude that my long lost Floyd Roberts must be is the son of William Clark and Sarah Sorrell Roberts.
--I believe he is the Floyd Roberts who applied for a license to marry Rose Etta Foster in Rowan Co. KY in 1902. (The return is missing). I believe he is the Floyd Roberts who married Zellie Cottle (actually Zella Caudill) in Morgan Co. KY in 1914.
--Thereafter, I have been unable to find him. He had left Zella by the time their only child was born in 1916. He is not in the Social Security records, does not turn up in any state census that I can find, or anywhere else.
--Rumor has it Floyd was living in or near Atlanta GA with another wife and three daughters when he called for his son (by Zella Caudill) from his death bed around 1960. The son went to him. No more is known. The son died a short time later, before sharing details of the meeting with the father.
--As you will see in the following family group sheet from the Rowan Co. KY Genweb site, Floyd's birthdate is given as 1882 and his death as 1959. These dates fall right in line with what I believe about the Floyd I seek.
--He is listed the 7th child of this William and Sarah Sorrell Roberts.
--Teri Pettit, to whom the groupsheet belongs, gives this info as her source for those dates:
84. Email dated 16 Mar 2002 from John G. Pettit <Littlejohnnavy@aol.com>, a descendant of Bettie Roberts and Samuel Pettit. The message listed 20 children of William Clark Roberts, with spouses for most of them, but no marriage dates, and only approximate birthdates.
--I have not been successful in connecting with this John G. Roberts. Can anyone help here?
--Perhaps you know about other children of the couple. Could someone you know happen to have any info on this family. I have found little info outside of this Rowan Co. Genweb site. There has to be someone somewhere connected to this line.
--Following the first family group sheet is another for Minitree and Euphamy Combs Roberts. These are the parents of Floyd's father William.
--The grand-son of this Floyd Roberts has been looking to find his Roberts roots for years. He (and I) would so appreciate any possible confirmation or suggestions or whatever one might give. (I am a helpful cousin from his Caudill side).

Notes for William "Clark" Roberts
According to Hall family tradition, Clark Roberts was a brother of Susan Roberts who married John M. Hall. This tradition is supported by the fact that the John M. Hall and Clark Roberts families are adjacent in the 1880 census, and that Clark and both of his parents were born in Virginia, as is true of the Minetry Clark family. But the 1860 census for Minetry Roberts shows no son named Clark. It shows a son named Isaac age 6 and one named James age 4, but both of those are listed separately in 1880. The other son of Minetry Roberts listed in 1860 under 10 was a son William, age 9. There is no William Roberts in 1870 in Rowan, Bath, Morgan or surrounding counties. Finally, the marriage license for his second marriage refers to him as William Clark Roberts. I think together all of this is pretty good evidence that the Clark Roberts who was listed as 25 in the 1880 census with wife Sarah is the same person as William Roberts son of Minetry. But I have seen no record that specifically documents his parentage.
The Rowan County News of Jan. 19, 1939 contains this notice of his death: "Funeral Rites Held For Former Pioneer Citizen - Clark Roberts, 91, Dies At West Virginia Home Funeral Conducted Here - Funeral rites for Clark Roberts, 91, pioneer citizen of Eastern Kentucky, who died at his home on Big Creek, W. Va., were conducted here last week with burial in the Baldwin cemetery in Morgan Fork. Funeral rites were conducted by Rev. T. F. Lyons and Rev. Henry Hall. Surviving are his wife and 22 children and about 60 grandchildren and great grandchildren. He is the grandfather of Eddie Roberts and the grandfather of Mrs. Woodrow Horn."
Census
1870 census of Bath Co., Ky, lists him as Clark Roberts, age 18, b. Virginia, with wife Sarah, age 16, born Ky, living with the family of Benjamin Botts, age 60, in Sharpsburg precinct, family #167.
1880 census of Rowan Co., Ky, Morehead precinct, lists as family #45:
Roberts, Clark, 25, farmer, Va Va Va; Sarah, 23, wife, Ky Ky Ky; James, 9, son; Lula, 7, dau; Katie, 5, dau; John, 3, son; Elizabeth, 2, dau. All the children are listed as born Ky Ky Ky, but that is probably just a clerical error, since Clark was born in Virginia and there is no reason to suppose these are not his children. The ages from the 1870 census are probably more accurate as well, since if these were correct, Clark would have been 15 and Sarah 13 when they married.

1860 census of Bath Co., Ky, lists as family #718:
Menetry Roberts, 35, Va; Feannie, 38, Va; Elizabeth, 15, Va; Willey, 14, Va; Susanna, 12, Va; Sarah E., 11, Va; William, 9, Va; Rose, 8, Va; Isaac, 6, Va; Lucinda, 5, Va; James, 4, Va; Mitchell, 2, Va; Joyce I., 6 mo., Ky.
Most of the older children seem to have only aged six years in the decade, Susannah and Sally only five years! I think most likely they were listed as older than their actual ages in 1850, because William was not born yet at the time of the 1850 census, so 9 going on 10 is probably the correct age for him. Also, the ages for Isaac (Isaiah), Lucinda and James are consistent with Grayson Co. birth records, another indication that this census is probably more accurate than the 1850 one.
Minetry and Euphamy may have both died before 1870, even though they were fairly young. I cannot find them in the 1870 census, and in that year Clark, Lucinda, and Troy were all living with other families. (I haven't found Isaiah, James or Joyce in 1870.)
