Sons of Edward STAPLETON, NC/1785 > KY/185-

I am hoping someone can help me clear up a mystery regarding the family of one of my gr-gr-gr grandfathers, James STAPLETON, b. 1829, who appears on the 1860 and 1870 Census of Russell & Pulaski Counties, KY.

Information on RootsWeb and on some family websites online indicate that Edward STAPLETON (Rowan Co., NC, 1785 - Owsley Co., KY, 185-) had a son named James Stapleton. This James is not on the 1850 Census in Owsley Co., nor anywhere else that I can find a possible match. The 1840 census, however, does show Edward Stapleton's household as including a boy whose age group would match my James.

Can anyone tell me if Edward Stapleton left a will - or, if not, what the source is of this information stating he had a son named James? I will appreciate any assistance.

Sincerely
Matthew Hovious
