Bob - I am descended from Rachel Wilhoite and her second husband, Andrew Thomason. Rachel's first husband was, indeed, Henry Sweatman who was considerably older than she. You have no doubt located Rachel and Sweatman in the 1850 census records. I believe the older children are Swetmans's by a previous wife. The younger two children, both apparently girls, I believe to be Rachel's. According to family lore Rachel had three children by Sweatman, and I believe one of them was a son. Alas, he must have been born after 1850. However, by 1860, Henry Sweatman was dead, and Rachel had married Thomason. For some reason, I can not locate either Thomason or Rachel in the 1860 census. I don't know why. According to my great-aunt's DAR application (which may not be completely accurate as it was filed in 1930 when the DAR was not as exacting as it is today) Rachel and Thomason married in 1857; my g-grandmother was born about 1859. Thomason did not die (according to my aunt) until 1869. So where they are in 1860 beats me. That census record might confirm the relationship of your g-grandfather to Rachel as he would have still been a young child in 1860 and probably living in her household. My g-grandmother Rebecca Jane Thomason maintained a close relationship with her Sweatman half-siblings and my g-aunts spoke of their Sweatman cousins. -- Georgia Green Stamper
