A deputy Sheriff

I am searching for a former Sheriff of Mayfield, Ohio County, Kentucky. I found an article in the Kentucky Pioneer Magazine.
The newpaper article was dated Wednesday, June 25, 1890.

Prof. Hargrove was shot and dangerously wonded by Deputy Slyvester Jones. The shooting occured near Farmington at the Hargrave's home. The dispute was over the hiring of a young lady as a teacher instead of Hargrove who wanted the job. Jones claimed that Hargrove grabbed an axe and was shot in self defense. hargrove and family denied this.

The next entry was 7/9/1890..Hargrove was almost fully recovered.

Sylvester Jones married Mary Rose and moved the family to Arkansas.

Can some one help me find information on the sheriff of Mayfield please?
