There were a good many Edgertons in the adjoining county of Washington.
In the 1870 census of Washington Co., I find James, 40; Mariah, 36; Anna, 17; Mary, 6; Lydia 8 mos.; Bennie, 10; James, 7; George, 5. I can't explain the order in which they were listed.
In 1860, these show: James T. Egerton, 29; Mariah, 25; Amy W. [Annie W.?], 7; Benjamin, 1.
Living next to them: D.P. Egerton, 70; Wineford, 56; George P., 23, B.H., 19; Armina Bucket, 16
In 1850: Benjamin P. Edgington, 60; Winny, 44; James, 20; Mary, 18; Willis, 15; George, 13; Christopher, 11, Benajmin, 9
Also in this census, but apparently not near Benjamin, is John G. Eggerton, 50, b. Vermont; Dracus A. (f.), 48, b. Ohio; James W., 20, b. Va., Louisa, 22, b. Va.
I find only these marriages in Washington Co. up to 1878:
John G. Edgerton m. Mary E. Seay, 13 May 1855
G.P. Egerton m. Mary E. Hedges, 5 Feb. 1861
There are 7 female marriages.
I don't find any people by this name in Washington Co. censuses before 1850.
I'm not really an Edgerton researcher, but if you learn more about this family, I'd appreciate knowing for the sake of a relative descended from them.
