Biography
Of
William Thomas Settle

Some confusion exists whether William Thomas Settle was born in Washington or Nelson County, Kentucky has occurred with various family histories. The unidentified history submitted by Bill Settle Reese states that William Thomas Settle was born in Washington County, Kentucky; all other documentation has claimed Nelson County, Kentucky as his place of birth.

Mary E. Settle

Nelson County is located in the western end of the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, extending into the hilly western knobs. It was formed in 1784 while a part of Virginia and named for Thomas Nelson, a Virginia governor. Washington County is located in the western end of the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, extending into the hilly western knobs. It was formed in 1792 from Jefferson County while still a part of Virginia and named to honor George Washington. Washington and Nelson are border counties so it is possible William could have been born in one and lived in the other.

We know the parents of William Thomas Settle married in Washington County in 1834. We also know that his mother, Frances Louisa Shackelford as well as his father, William Harrison Settle, both were born in Nelson County. The biography of William Harrison Settle states that William Thomas came to Daviess County from Nelson when he was but two years of age. It is believed that William Harrison and his wife Frances were living in Washington County at the birth of their first two children, William Thomas and Martha. It appears they left Washington County in 1839 making a brief stop in Nelson before departing for Daviess County.

William Thomas Settle married two times, both in McLean County, Kentucky. His first marriage was sometime in 1862 to Nannie T. Ambrose. Not much is known about Nannie other than she was born in 1841 and died in 1862 at about twenty-one years of age, the same year as her marriage to William Thomas. It was common in earlier years for women to die giving birth so I suspect this as a possible cause of death. His second marriage was to Emma P. Lockett on February 02, 1865. Emma was born in Kentucky, county unknown, on January 28, 1945. William Thomas and Emma would remain in McLean County, producing five children, until theirs deaths. William died on June 24, 1917 and Emma on May 03, 1927. Both are buried in McLean County.
