Hello,

I'm trying to figure out information on the ancestors of my (maternal) gg-grandfather, Cleo Benjamin Gooch (aka C B Gooch). A railroad brakeman, he died in a boiler explosion in Florence, Colorado, in June 1907 when my great-grandfather William Arthur Gooch was just a baby. Cleo was married to Fannie Whitmyer (sometimes Whitmeyer) abt. 1900 and they had two sons, Edward and William, who were born near Covington, KY, and grew up in Shreveport, Caddo Co., Louisiana.

Because Cleo died so early on, we know little about his origins. I know from my grandmother that the Gooches were originally from Kentucky (prob. Lincoln and Pulaski Counties), and before that, from Virginia. I'm trying to figure out if Sarah Elizabeth Eoff Gooch (19 April 1853 - 1923) is Cleo's mother, and if so, who Cleo's father is. The 1870 (Pulaski Co) census lists Sarah E Gooch as the wife of John A Gooch, but that same John A is listed as Mary F's husband in 1900. Also in 1900, Sarah Gooch is listed as the wife of (a much older) Henderson Gooch, and Cleo and Emmett are listed as their children. (Henderson Gooch is listed on Rootsweb sometimes as William Henderson or Nathan Henderson Gooch.) In the 1876 KY Birth Records, Emmett Gooch is listed as Sarah (Goff!) and John's son. Unfortunately, there are no birth records for 1880 online.

To complicate matters, Sarah E. Eoff had a first-cousin Sarah J. Eoff (b. abt 1855), who also may have married one of these Gooch men.

Henderson Gooch was also married to Jane Craig Leach, with whom he had at least 2 children who survived to adulthood. John A. Gooch also had several children with Mary Frances Gosney. All of this means that it's difficult to tell whose child is whose!

Any information would be greatly appreciated! If you would like information on the descendants of Cleo Gooch, I would be happy to help.

-Ellen
