Does anyone have a connection to James NIXON born Ireland, c.1835 (probably baptised at Athboy, Co Meath, 1835, son of Francis/Frank and Jane NIXON, nee GREY). James came to North America about 1847. His father apparently had died in Ireland from a horse bite and his mother took the 2 sons (he had an older brother Francis/Frank) to North America, apparently sailing from Cork. Sadly, she died en route and is buried on an island "in deference to her 2 sons", (presumably rather than being given a traditional overboard sea burial). This island *may* be in the St Laurence River? James (and presumably Francis too) went to cousins in Toronto for a few years (though whether that was the original plan, I don't know). James is thought to have gone to the USA in 1854. What the connection was to bring him there I don't know, but there are other NIXON relatives rumoured to have gone to the USA - a William and a John, so perhaps he went to live with them. He seems to have married a Mary Ellen MARQUIS (born PA) between 1860 and 1865 when their first child William was born. All of his ?8 children were born in Kentucky. They seem to have been located in 1880 in Rush, Kenton county, KY. His children were called William (c.1865), Ella (c.1867), Addie/Ada (c.1868), Eva (c.1871), Mary Ann (known as Ann/Anna, c. 1873/4), Grace (c.1876), Lucy (c.1879) and James (but given as a daughter on one census so may be Jane (also c.1879, but suspect is a bit later as not on the 1880 census). More likely to be James then Jane as reputedly it was 2 sons and 6 daughters in the family. Ada married La Marcus Thompson the inventor of the Coney Island rollercoaster. Mary Anne (Anna) married Henry Burton CLOSSON and they lived in Cincinnati, OH. They had a son, Burton CLOSSON who also had a son Burton CLOSSON. Sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to make a connection with descendants of any of these people and discover more about the American branches of the family. In return I have a lot of information about the older part of the family back in Ireland into the 1700s - based around counties Meath, Westmeath and Cavan. Also about the descendants of the Irish part throughout the 1800s to the present day. Thanks, Fiona WILSON Sheffield, UK Notify Administrator about this message?
