Tennessee Rolling Works Oct 23rd, 1864 Dear Cousin Fannie: We received your letter some time ago and would have written sooner but Lizzie has been very sick. She has not been able to sit up for two months, for a long time we thought she had the consumption; but her physician thinks now she is out of danger and will recover soon and enjoy better health than ever before. We do indeed sympathize with you in your sad bereavement. The loss of your dear husband & little babe, I hope you will not grieve for them as those who have no hope, and remember that our Heavenly Father knows what is best for us; and it must be for some wise purpose that they have been called home. Poor little Mollie & Billy they're now orphans but cousin Fannie I know you will be good & kind to them. Dear little Mollie. She is a kind and affectionate child & she loved and respected her step-brother when she was with us and I hope she will always love & obey her (missing word) . You must write to me immediately upon the receipt of this letter. I am so anxious to hear from you. My father intends writing soon, he has been away from home a great deal & Lizzie being so sick has kept him from writing before now. Aunt Polly has written that she intends visiting us this winter. If you can make it convenient to come down with her, we would be so well pleased to see you. We are all well but Lizzie & she is mending slowly. With the kindest love of all at home I remain yours truly, Tillie Dobbs Please excuse this badly written letter as it is written in haste--write soon. -------------------------------- NOTES: "Tillie Dobbs" is Matilda E. DOBBS, daughter of Asa DOBBS and Martha SMART. In 1860 the Asa Dobbs family was living in Eddyville, Lyon Co., KY. I believe this is the location of "Tennessee Rolling Works" in the heading of the letter. "Cousin Fannie", the recipient of the letter, was Frances E. MILLER SLADE, daughter of George S. MILLER and America HILL. In 1860 the George S. Miller family was living in Nashville, Davidson Co., TN. This letter most likely was written in regards to the death of Fannie's husband, Nathaniel J. Slade, and their infant, as Tillie is sending her sympathy. Mollie and Billy, mentioned in the letter, are the children of Nat Slade and his deceased first wife, Martha Lea/Lee. Nat and Fannie also had a daughter together, Sarah Ellen/Ella Slade, but Tillie doesn't mention her. I believe Lizzie is a sister to Tillie. I don't know who "Aunt Polly" is. In 1865 Matilda Dobbs married James M. Miller, brother to Fannie. They lived in Nashville the remainder of their lives. Notify Administrator about this message?
