Paul:

In case you hadn't found your answer yet, understand that Pine Mountain is a long, large mountain that runs with few breaks or passes pretty much the entire length parallel to the KY-VA state line. Pine Mountain runs from Tennessee (part of what you cross on I-75 just out of Jellico) through Cumberland Gap, Harlan, Cumberland, Whitesburg, Jenkins, Elkhorn City and on into Virginia. US 119 stays on its south flank, as does the Cumberland River, for most of the distance to Whitesburg. The Cumberland River is formed off its southern flank (See Bad Branch Falls) and US 119 crosses over the mountain to Whitesburg, then continues to Jenkins along its north flank before turning northward.

Several National and State Parks, Recreation Areas, and nature preserves are located along the length of this mountain: Big South Fork National Recreation Area,Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, Indian Mountain and Cove Lake State Parks (Tennessee), Pine Mountain and Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come State Park (Kentucky), Pine Mountain and Bad Branch Falls Nature Preserves (Kentucky, and Breaks Interstate Park (Kentucky and Virginia).

Hope this helps
