Notes for John Rolfe:
Rolfe, John

Rolfe, John (1585-1622), English colonist of Jamestown, Virginia, who was married to Pocahontas, the younger daughter of the Native American chief Powhatan. Rolfe was born in Norfolk, England. In 1609 he sailed to America with the expedition led by English navigator Sir George Somers. He reached Virginia in 1610 and became a planter. Rolfe cultivated the strain of tobacco that became Virginia's staple crop-exports of tobacco to England provided economic stability for the colony.
In 1614 Rolfe, a widower, married Pocahontas. Their marriage brought a time of peace between the colonists and Native Americans that lasted for eight years. In 1616 the couple, with their infant son, went to England. Pocahontas received a royal reception, but she became ill and died the following year. Rolfe returned to Virginia, where in 1621 he became a member of the colony's first Council of State. He was killed in the massacre of 1622.

Jamestown (Virginia)

Jamestown (Virginia), former village of Virginia, the first permanent English settlement in America. It is located in present-day James City County, on an island in the James River, southeast of Richmond, part of the 3816-hectare (9430-acre) Colonial National Historical Park.
Jamestown was founded on May 14, 1607, by a small group led by Captain Christopher Newport, who was hired by the London Company to transport colonists. Many settlers died from famine and disease in the winter of 1609-10. The survivors were encouraged to stay in Jamestown by the arrival of new settlers and supplies the following June. In 1612 tobacco growing was started. The colony prospered and became the capital of Virginia. In 1619 the first representative assembly in America was held here. In the same year, at Jamestown, the first Africans were imported into the original 13 English colonies. The village was often attacked by Native Americans. In 1622, 350 colonists were killed; 500 in 1644. Colonists rebelling against the rule of Governor William Berkeley burned Jamestown in 1676 (see Bacon's Rebellion). The seat of government was moved to the Middle Plantation (now Williamsburg) in 1699, and Jamestown was deserted. The National Park Service and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (which owns 9 hectares/23 acres of the island), have excavated and restored the area. The Jamestown Archaeological Laboratory contains relics unearthed by National Park Service excavations. Jamestown Festival Park, adjacent to the national park, has full-scale replicas of early ships and a re-creation of James Fort (1607). Pavilions depict Native American and English cultures.

Notes for Pocahontas:
Pocahontas

Pocahontas, (1595?-1617), daughter of the Native American chief Powhatan. She was born in Virginia. Her real name was Matoaka; the name Pocahontas means "playful one." According to a legend, in 1608 Pocahontas saved the life of Captain John Smith by holding his head in her arms as he was about to be clubbed to death by her father's warriors. Many historians doubt the story, which is not found in Smith's detailed personal narrative written at the time. The story first appeared in Smith's Generall Historie of Virginia (1624). In 1612 Pocahontas was captured by the English and taken to Jamestown. She became a convert to Christianity and took the name Rebecca. In 1614 she married John Rolfe, one of the colonists, with the blessings of both the governor and her father. Eight years of peace between the Native Americans and the English followed the marriage.
In 1615 Pocahontas had her first child, Thomas, and the following year the family went to England. She met the king and queen of England and was received with royal honor. On the eve of her return to Virginia, Pocahontas died of smallpox and was buried in the chapel of the parish church in Gravesend, England. Her son was educated in England, but returned to Virginia and became an important settler; many prominent Virginians claim to be his descendants.

Pocahontas

Pocahontas, the daughter of Native American Chief Powhatan, helped maintain peace between the Native Americans and English colonists in early America. She was temporarily held captive by the English in 1613, and during this time she and Jamestown colonist John Rolfe fell in love. Pocahontas converted to Christianity and married Rolfe in 1614. She received a royal welcome from the English upon her trip to London in 1616. While waiting to sail back to America, she became ill with smallpox and died.

Notes for Chief Pohatan:

Powhatan, real name Wa-Hun-Sen-A-Cawh or Wahunsonacook (1550?-1618), father of the princess Pocahontas. According to legend, Powhatan was ready to kill the English settler John Smith when Pocahontas intervened and saved Smith's life.
Powhatan was the chief of the Powhatan confederacy of Algonquian tribes, in what is now Virginia, at the time the English first settled there in 1607. Fighting between the Native Americans and colonists arose when the new settlers began taking lands belonging to Powhatan and his people. In 1614, Pocahontas married John Rolfe, one of the settlers, and there began an eight-year peace between the Native Americans and colonists. Pocahontas and Rolfe sailed to England, where she died in 1617. Powhatan died the following year.
