Ninian A. Chamberlain, Jr. (1835-1908) was the son of Ninian A. Chamberlain, Sr. (1792-1877) and Margaret Watkins (1790/1791-1863), of Knox Co., TN. He is a somewhat enigmatic figure; information concerning him is decidedly scant. He was b. and raised in E. TN. Apparently, he drifted to Sonoma Co., CA, some time during the Civil War and lived there for a while. When next he appears (c1872), it is to marry Amelia A. Ballinger, of Knox Co., KY (not TN). Over the course of the next 13 yrs., Ninian A., Jr., and Amelia had a family of 6 children in Barbourville, KY, at least 2 of whom died in infancy. After the death of Amelia in 1886, he received a land grant in Knox Co., KY, on the Cumberland River, where he apparently spent the rest of his life.
Following is a tentative chronology of that life, one that draws on the few available sources that I have been able to scrape together so far and that well illustrates the dearth of information on this individual.
