Hello. I am looking for any/all information about a Letcher County, Kentucky resident named Fess Whitaker, who wrote a book called THE HISTORY OF CORPORAL FESS WHITAKER (published in 1918 by The Standard Printing Co. of Louisville).

In the book, Whitaker says that he was born June 17, 1880 in Knott County, Kentucky but moved to Letcher County when he was six. He worked as a coal miner, served with Teddy Roosevelt during The Spanish-American War, worked for some time as a train engineer in Texas and came back to Letcher County and became the county jailer there.

In particular, I would love to confirm Whitaker's date of birth and find out any information about his date/place of death.

Please email any information you might have to harryothomas@gmail.com. Thank you.
