Lisa, here is what I know (or think I know)about the family:

Descendants of Spencer S. Sweeney

       1        Spencer S. Sweeney       1836 -
..              +Mary Moore       1835 - 1880
.....       2        Martha Sweeney       1856 - 1860
.....       2        Annie Elisa Sweeney       1857 -
.........              +Samuel Hall       1844 -
.....       2        William E. Sweeney       1859 -
.........              +Mary ?       1862 - 1910
.....       2        James Monroe Sweeney       1860 - 1925
.........              +Nettie Elswick       1870 - 1934
.....       2        Mary Elizabeth Sweeney       1864 -
.........              +Joseph Richard Hall       1859 -
.....       2        Andrew Sweeney       1866 -
.....       2        Spencer Sweeney       1871 - 1956
.........              +Mary J. ?       1870 - 1962
.....       2        George W. Sweeney       1874 -
.....       2        Preston Sweeney       1878 - 1965
.........              +Lula ?

I'm not absolutely certain about the son William E. Sweeney marrying Mary UNKNOWN.

1900 United States Federal Census > Kentucky > Boyd > Cannonsburg > District 11 Family # 353
1910 United States Federal Census > Kentucky > Boyd > 3-Dist > District 17 > Dwelling # 58I

I have two different families that claim to be this William Sweeney's family, but believe it is right, even though he once reported he was born in PA.

James Monroe Sweeney that married Nettie Elswick is another place I'm not certain, although his West Virginia death certificate says he was born in Pikeville.

1900 United States Federal Census > West Virginia > Cabell > Guyandotte > District 6
They had been married 13 years.

1920 United States Federal Census > West Virginia > Cabell > Guyandotte > District 8 > Dwelling # 40
William Sweeney, age 2, and adopted is in the household. Also a daughter-in-law, Leona Sweeney, age 19, is there.

This man died in Huntington, WV on Dec 26, 1925. His death certificate informant stated that he was b. on June 27, 1860 in Pikeville, KY. , but the informant didn't know his parents' names. Nettie Elswick was listed as his wife.

Preston Sweeney was in the military in 1900, and reported being from Blaine, KY, which was where his parents last lived.

1900 United States Federal Census > Military and Naval Forces > Philippine Islands > Escalante > District 165, with United States residence listed as Blaine, KY.

1930 United States Federal Census > Ohio > Scioto > Union > District 20, born in Kentucky, age 42 was written in, and overwritten with a 52, making him the right age. Also listed is wife Lula, age 36, and born in Kentucky and son Preston, Jr., age 10 and born in Kentucky.

I found this Preston Sweeney from KY, and THINK it is the right one, but have not proven him.
