I went back and took another look at Pat Spaulding's marriage record and you are right, I think it does say Jae Spaulding. I looked at other words that had a O in them and they are made a lot different than the A's.

I see Jay Spaulding in the 1900 census listed as single and in the 1910 census it says he is widowed.

I found a birth record as follows:
West Virgina Births 1853 - 1969
Name: Gorma Spaulding
Date of birth: June 3, 1896
Birthplace: Wayne Co, WV
Gender: Male
Father: Jay Spaulding
Residence of father: StoMnecool
Mother: Nancy J.
(Birthdate was transcribed as June 13, 1896 but original says June 3, 1896)

In the 1900 census Gorman Spaulding, born May 1896, and his mother Jane (Nancy J.?)born July 1873 were living in Mingo Co, WV. She was a servant in the Jefferson Parsley household. It says Jane was married 7 yrs, she and both parents born Ky. She had 2 children, 1 living. I wonder if Pat Spaulding is the other child? In 1900 Jay is still living in Wayne Co, WV listed as single but then in 1910 he is in Mingo Co, WV also.

I found their marriage record:
Jay Spaulding married Nancy Jane Smith Feb 13, 1893 in Martin Co, Ky. No other info listed.

Jay Spaulding born Jan 15, 1871, died July 26, 1950, buried in the Hannah family cemetery, Kermit, Mingo Co, WV. In the same cemetery is Sarah Ellen Spaulding b. June 3, 1874, died July 31, 1937.

Jay Spaulding married Sarah in 1911 so maybe when Pat Spaulding got married he listed them as his parents because Sarah was his father's wife and maybe he didn't know his mother or didn't have a relationship with her. It appears to me that his mother was probably Nancy Jane Smith.

Now to your Margaret Alexander. I have been working on her most of the day and I think I have solved the mystery but let's see if I can explain it so it makes sense:

Margaret was the daughter of Peyton Alexander and Mahala Hensley.

Scioto Co, Ohio marriage records 1803 - 1860
Peyton Alexander married Mahala Hensley April 20, 1835.

Peyton Alexander must have died or they were divorced because Mahala remarried to Isaac Smith on Sept 20, 1849 in Pike Co, Ky according to the Kentucky marriage records 1822 - 1865. In 1850 they were in Lawrence Co, Ky:

1850 Lawrence Co, Ky
Isaac Smith, 35, Va
Mahale Smith, 36, Va
Lewis Alexander, 9, Ohio
John Alexander, 7, Ohio
Wm Alexander, 5, Ohio
Margaret Alexander, 3, Ohio
(Isaac Smith is the son of Thomas Smith b. 1781 Connecticut and Rachel.)

I haven't been able to find out what happened to Peyton Alexander and Isaac Smith. I don't find any death or burial records on either of them.

On Feb 9, 1860 Mahala remarried to Richard Hall in Lawrence Co, Ky and Mahala and her children were enumerated twice in the 1860 census:

Even though Mahala and Richard Hall were married in Feb 1860, on June 4, 1860 she her children were living in the William Hensley household and he might have been her brother although I wasn't able to prove it.

1860 Catlettsburg, Boyd Co, Ky, June 4, 1860
William Hensley, 42, born Va
Nancy Hensley, 35
John W. Hensley, 12
James L. Hensley, 10
Floyd Hensley, 8
Jacob Hensley, 7
Francis M.Hensley, 5
Joseph Hensley, 1
Mahala Alexander, 49 (Wonder why she is going by Alexander)
Lewis Alexander, 19
John Alexander, 16
William Alexander, 14
Margaret Alexander, 13
Polly Alexander, 10
Melissa Alexander, 7
Mary E. Alexander, 1
(Hmmm, I haven't tried to straighten out those Alexander kids)

Now on July 13, 1860 Mahala and her children were living with her husband, Richard Hall, who she married in February:

1860 Boyd Co, Ky, July 13, 1860
Richard Hall, 64, born Va
Mahala Hall, 48, Ky
Lewis Hall, 24, Ohio
John Hall, 17, Ohio
William Hall, 16, Ohio
Margaret Hall, 14, Ky
Polly Hall, 10, Ky
Melissa, 6, Ky
(Obviously Lewis, John, William and Margaret are all Alexanders and I am not sure about Polly and Melissa)

I found these two messages online and that is how I found out Peyton Alexander's name:

My g great grandfather was peyton alexander my great was lewis alexander and grandfather was pharoah pharoah grew up using the Hensley name Lewis(Louis) used both I know peyton and Mahalia were married in scioto oh She later married a Issac smith from ky Pharoah (Ferrel)
married Viney Cyrus I have searched this family for a while and run into deadends - donna hensley

Another one:

Mahala Hensley married Peyton Alexander then married Isaac Smith of Ky. She married Peyton in Ohio counties, they were in Scioto Co. Oh, Lawrence Co, Ky, and Mingo Co, W.Va. -Donna Hensley

Lewis Alexander, brother of Margaret, was in Mingo Co, WV in the 1900 census but in 1910 Mingo Co census his wife Sallie is listed as widow.

I will let you take it from here. Try to tie Mahala Hensley to the William Hensley she was living with in 1860 census and perhaps you can find out how Vicie Hensley connects. If she was cousin to Margaret in the 1900 Mingo Co census, she would have to be a child of one of Mahala's siblings I would think.

Good luck to you and let me know if you need anymore help.
