HELP AND COMMENTS WILL BE APPRECIATED REGARDING
WILLIAM BROCK SKAGGS ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS:
Researching the ancestors of:
Johnnie Floyd Skaggs b 1900 Newton Co., Arkansas,
son of William Thomas Skaggs b 1870 Newton Co., Arkansas,
son of Willis Green Skaggs b 1846 Green Co., Kentucky,
son of William Perry Skaggs b about 1817-1819 Green Co., Kentucky,
son of William Brock Skaggs b about 1793-1795 probably Green Co., Kentucky.
Theory on parentage of William Brock Skaggs is that he probably descends from:
James Skaggs I b ca. 1700 and Rachel Unknown through their son
James Skaggs II b ca 1734 and Mary Unknown through their son
Henry Skaggs b ca 1755 and Nannie Unknown possibly being their son
or a grandson through one of their unmarried daughters, possibly Jane Skaggs and a male of the Brock family.
Deed regarding property of Henry Skaggs lists James, Jeremiah, Stephen, Sally, Joseph, and Nancy Skaggs; Another deed lists James, Jeremiah, Stephen, Joseph, Jain (Jane) and Nancy Skaggs, along with Sally Skaggs’ husband William Grayham, and William (“X” “O” or “B”) Skaggs.
William Brock Skaggs on 1830 census interpreted as follows:
William Brock Skaggs and wife Nancy
Unknown male (possibly brother of William Brock?)
Unknown female (possibly sister of William Brock?)
William Perry Skaggs
Sarah “Sally” Skaggs
Josiah (or Joseph) Brock Skaggs
John Calvin Skaggs
Another son, Dotson Elbert Skaggs, was born in 1834.
William Brock Skaggs believed to have married Nancy Warren in 1817, marriage contract dated 30 Dec 1816 Green Co., Kentucky.
Nancy Warren b ca 1803
daughter of William Warren and Rhoda Unknown.
Nancy Warren’s siblings also married into the Skaggs family:
Mary “Polly” Warren’s first husband may have been Joseph Skaggs, son of Henry and Nannie.
Rhoda Warren ‘s husband was Stephen Skaggs,
son of Henry and Nannie.
Andrew Warren married Ruth Etherton, daughter of Moses Etherton and Rachel Skaggs, sister of Henry Skaggs who married Nannie.
Some question the identity of Nancy who married William Brock Skaggs. From researching the family of their son William Perry Skaggs, it seems that he had a strong connection with Hardin Warren, Nancy Warren’s brother.
William Perry Skaggs has not been located in the 1840 Green County census and might possibly have been working with or for Hardin Warren as a teamster; William Perry Skaggs seems to have followed Hardin Warren to Johnson Co., Arkansas and the Skaggs and Warren family connections continued there as they all lived in close proximity along Little Piney Creek beginning in the 1850’s.
