BURNETT FAMILY NOTES :

There is a book titled “ Grayson County Births , Kentucky Vital Records ” by Mrs. Frances Terry Ingmire
A copy of this work is held by the Indiana State Library as General 976.901 G 7841. The book states that it covers Grayson County Kentucky Births 1852-1859 , 1861 , 1901-1904 and 1907 . The work does not appear to have a publication date and is a paperbound and appears to be a home made press.
The work has some errors which I will state at the end of the entries on the Burnett surname.

This work lists the following entries which may be helpful in our study of the Burnett family.

As follows:

Date Name of Child Sex Condition A ( Alive ) or D ( Dead ) Name of Father & Mother Race

3/30/1852 Samues W. Burnett Male Alive William Burnett Juda A. Wilson White
8/1/1853 Mary E. Burnett Female Alive James Burnett Elizabeth Stone White
8/14/1854 Mary C. Burnett Female Alive F.W. Burnett Rachel Craig
8/19/1861 Trecy Burnett Female Alive F.W. Burnett and Rachel Craig
7/4/1901 James B. Leslie Male Alive J.A. Leslie Ida Burnett White
5/19/1904 Sarah L. Burnett Female Alive A.W.B. Burnett Ida Bruce White

We do know that the wife of A.W.B. Burnett was Ada Bruce not Ida Bruce . It is also possible that the
F.W. Burnett mentioned was Washington F. Burnett (W.F. not F.W. ) . The information in this work appears to be from the Grayson County Recorders Office . The Sarah L. Burnett listed is Lena Burnett
Who her father called “ Sally ” while both were living . The date of birth for Sarah Lena Burnett is listed as 19 May 1904 . The only way this date is correct is if Sarah Lena Burnett was a twin to Clyde Lynch Burnett who was born on this date . Such small errors in this work bring into question how accurate the dates are and how accurately these dates were reported to the Grayson County Recorder .
The address given for Mrs. Ingmire at the time was 10166 Clairmont Drive , St.Louis , Missouri 63136 .

Kentucky did not start recording birth and death records statewide until 1911 . The Grayson County Health
Department ( 124 East White Oak Street , Leitchfield , Kentucky 42754 ) has records of Grayson County
Births and Deaths after 1911 .

A fire destroyed the Grayson County Court House in 1896 and destroyed all of the records at the Grayson County Clerks Office . The clerk has records from 1906 . I was in contact with the Deputy Clerk there named Gail S. Clement and she was very helpful .

I was in contact with the Grayson County Public Library and while they have limited staff they were
Very helpful with cemetery records . Thanks to Cuba at the library for help with these records .
( Grayson County Public Library )

NOTES REGARDING ADA BRUCE :

It has always been family oral tradition that Ada was from Ireland and as a little girl came to Kentucky where she was adopted . I did find a record of Ada as a child however it is unknown if she is listed with
Her birth family or adopted family . Most of the records for Grayson County were destroyed in the 1896 fire which has made this search more complicated . Ada appears in the 1880 Federal Census to Grayson County Kentucky . That record follows :

1880 Federal Census of Breckinridge County Kentucky
Forks of the Rough District
Supervisors District 2 , Enumeration District 22
Family Number 118
Taken 15 and 16th June 1880
( all birthplaces listed as Kentucky )

Bruce , James age 26 White Male Farmer
Annie age 31 Wife White Female
Frances age 9 daughter Female White
Ada age 6 daughter Female White *
Ethel age 2 daughter Female White
John C. age 5 months son Male White
(end of this record )

Grayson County Marriage Records state that John C. Bruce the son of James Bruce and Annie Hornbeck was given in marriage to Lillie Kiper daughter of Samuel Kiper and Malindo ( or Malinda ? ) Reno on 29 November 1903 at Grayson County , Kentucky ,

Ethel Bruce married to Charles Kiper

In Grayson County and Breckinridge county areas lived a Amy Hornback who married Willie Kiper .
I have been in contact with a researcher named Charles Steinlicht ( chalois@ruralroute.net ) ( R.R. 1, Box 99 , Colfax ,IL . 61728 ) on these people . He says that the parents of this Amy Hornback was John C. Hornback and Martha Frank . I have not been able to find any connection between these people and Annie Hornback who married to James Bruce .

A search of the 1870 Federal Census of Breckinridge County Kentucky for John Bruce and Annie Horback found the following :

Page 116 , House # 16 Hudsonville Precinct , Hudsonville Post Office :
Broune , Wm. Age 65
Eliza wife age 66 born in Virginia
Clifton son age 24 dentist
Hornback , Ann age 20 cooks and etc.

There is a William Bruce age 27 working on the farm of Francis and Jane Coombs at page 75 , House 41
DeHaven’s district .Planters Hill Post Office # 41

There is a Alex Bruce age 25 ( black , male ) working on the farm of J.H. and and Emilene Carman at page 123 , Hudsonville District, Constantine Post Office # 3

There is a Jo ( John ? ) Bruce age 18 ( black, male ) working on the of G.W. and A.E. Carman on Page 143 at Lost Run Post Office . # 67

There is a Caroline Bruce ( Black, Female ) who was working as a cook & nurse . She had a daughter named Susan age 5 . They are on Page 61 , Town of Cloverport # 27

There is a Hiram Bruse ( not Bruce ) age 67 and wife Mary G. age 60 and a child named William Foster age 10 living with them on Page 109 , Haynes Precient , Cloverport Post Office # 12

There is no mention of a James Bruce in the 1870 Federal Census of Breckinridge or Grayson County Census . I have not found Amy Horback as a ten year old in the 1860 Census .

This is all the information I have been able to find on these people who are listed as Ada’s parents . I started to look into the adoption of Ada Bruce by researching Kentucky records .

I contacted Becky Mercer ,DC at the Grayson County Court Clerk’s Office ( 10 Public Square ,Leitchfield , Kentucky 42754 ) who told me that their office has Marriage , deeds and wills from 1896 . County adoption records for Grayson County for that period were handled through the Breckinridge County District Court .
Becky Mercer DC wrote that she contacted Elois Downs at the Circuit Court Clerks Office regarding adoption records for that period in Breckinrige County . Elois Downs ( 1-270 – 259-3040 ) confirmed that these records of Kentucky adoption are considered confidential and that I would need a court order to open these records . I next contacted

the Office of Judge Sam Monarch ( who happened to be away) and then spoke with Judge Miller who had me send him some information both on the family and on the law saying that these might be opened . I then researched Kentucky law and found Title 199.572 which addresses the examination of
Kentucky adoption records , Subsection 6 of the same Title which states the following :
“ If after diligent and reasonable effort , the secretary of the cabinet certifies that both biological parents are
deceased or the secretary is unable to locate said parents , then a Judge of the Circuit Court ,upon motion
of an adopted person , may order that all papers and records of the Cabinet for Families and Children
and those of the Circuit Court pertaining to the adoption shall be open to inspection to the adult adopted
person .In any case the court shall order that only identifying information about the biological parents
be shared with the adult adopted person . ”
Amended 1998 Kentucky Acts chapter 426, section 146 ,
effective 15 July 1998 ; Created 1986 Kentucky Acts chapter 43 , section 4, effective 15 July 1986 .
After sending this information along with the privacy policy of the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) and a couple of other things along with some family information and my proof of relationship to Ada Bruce to Judge Miller he review things . The Circuit Court that covers Breckinridge County is at Brandenberg , Kentucky . ( P.O. Box 245,Brandenburg , KY, 40108 ). After a careful review of things Judge Miller permitted a search to be completed for an adoption record of Ada Bruce in Breckinridge County to be conducted and reviewed . I received a letter from Connie Brumfield Clerk of the Breckinridge County District and Circuit Court ( P.O. Box 111, Hardinsburg ,Kentucky 40143 ) dated 20 August 2001 in which she says “ Dear Mr. Bush . I am writing in regards to your letter of request dated August 14 , 2001 for adoption records of Ada Bruce . As I mentioned to you on the phone , the court house burned in January 1948 and many records were lost . A search of our older records on adoptions located in the basement of my office are only from that period of time forward . I regret being unable to help you in this matter . Sincerely Connie Brumfield , Clerk ”

After a search of Kentucky Federal Census records and an attempt to locate Ada Bruce’s Kentucky adoption record little firm information is known . Using the family oral tradition that she was born in Ireland I attempted to locate an Irish adoption record or certificate of export for Ada Burce . The fact that the Ireland of the nineteenth century was divided into two countries in the twentieth century complicated matters . The Ireland of the past is today both Northern Ireland which remains under British control or
The Republic of Ireland which has gained its independence from British control . Both countries have separate record offices .

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland is located at 66 Balmoral Avenue ,Belfast BT9 6NY and they ask that you have much more specific data than what we have at this point .

I also contacted the Methodist Church in Ireland where I received a letter dated 24 August 2000 from Edmund T.I. Mawhnney who referred me to the baptismal registers at the Public Records Office .

After a search of the Kentucky areas in which Ada Bruce was found an a very basic search of the records which may or may not be in Ireland . The only thing I can think to do at this point is to visit the Public Record Office in Belfast . A review of all Methodist church records for Grayson and Breckinridge County Kentucky may also be helpful .

Ada was born in 1874 so the first time she would be in the census records is in 1880 where she shows up in Breckinridge County, Ky . The 1890 Federal Census burned in a Washington D.C. fire in 1922 . She married in 1894 so any information about her childhood family at that point is more difficult to find .

{ here ends my my notes on Ada Bruce }
