Paula,

Thank you for your response! Since I posted the query about Billy Joe Peace, I have discovered a few more facts about the experiences of the boys from Gallatin County during WWII. Billy Joe Peace and my father, Charles "Cecil" Black were on the Liberty ship, Marcus Daly, when it was hit by a Japanese plane. Unfortunately, as you know, Billy Joe was fatally injured in that incident. The boys were drafted in 1941 and went to Ft. Thomas to prepare for their journey to Camp Shelby near Hattiesburg, Mississippi. I have started some research at the Gallatin County library where there are copies of the Gallatin County News on microfilm. My eyes do not allow me to spend more than a couple of hours there at a time, and my job and family do not allow me to spend more than about one Saturday morning a month there. Reading the columns from the towns like Glencoe and Napoleon from 1941 gives one a taste of what life was like at that time. Fascinating!

I do not know Gail (Black) Roberts and don't think she is related. My grandparents, C.N. (Charles Newton) and Mary "Agnes" Black, moved to Glencoe in 1939 from Indiana. They operated the general store in Glencoe and a huckster route through the countryside. The children of C.N. and Agnes were my dad Charles "Cecil" Black and Inez Black and Marvin Black. My uncle, Marvin, lives in Walton and drove a city bus in N. Ky for over 35 years. He is 88 years young now and as sharp as a tack! I would really enjoy meeting with your dad to talk about the old days in Gallatin County. Do you think that would be possible sometime this spring/summer?
