G Grandfather died poor, who would have buried him?

I have a general question. As near as I can gather from family lore, my great grandfather, William (Billy ) Simmons, died in Fulton Co. (probably around Hickman), sometime between 1912-1930. He was poor as a church mouse, wife had divorced him, children had deserted him and moved off.

Who would have buried someone like that , who never worked much in their life and wouldn't have had any money to be buried?

If someone could point me in the right direction or give me some hints about the social customs of that time, I'd appreciate it.
