Smith & Other Families Emigrated to Indiana early 1800s?

Hello,

I am writing regarding the emigration of several Fleming County families including the Smith, Detro and Coombs families to Indiana in the period 1800-1840. Why did so many families leave Fleming County for Indiana during this time?

My relatives left the county for Indiana counties of Clark, Floyd, Putnam and Washington. I would be very grateful for information on this emigration.
