Descendants of William Sparks

Generation No. 1

       1. William1 Sparks was born Abt. 1794 in Kentucky, and died Bef. 1860 in Andrew County, Missouri. He married Cordelia Donavan August 08, 1815 in Fleming County, Kentucky. She was born Abt. 1794 in Kentucky, and died September 1869 in Andrew County, Missouri.

Notes for William Sparks:
This information is from the Sparks Quarterly (Published by The Sparks Family Association) September 1965, Volume XIII, No. 3, pages 928-930:
SPARKSES IN THE WAR OF 1828 - BOUNTY LAND AND PENSION APPLICATIONS
WILLIAM SPARKS, born about 1794 in Kentucky; volunteered in Bourbon County, Kentucky; married Cordelia Donavan in Fleming county, Kentucky, in 1815; died in Andrew County, Missouri, between 1856 and 1860; Land Warrant File 45 800-80-55.

On October 24, 1850, William Sparks of Lewis County, Kentucky, appeared before a justice of the peace named Stephen Bliss to make application for bounty land under the provisions of the Congressional Act of September 28, 1850. William Sparks stated that he was 62 years old and that he had been drafted as a private into the company commanded by Capt. Henry Ellis in the 16th Regiment of Kentucky Militia commanded by Col. Porter. He stated that he had "volunteered at Millersburg in Bourbon County in the state of Kentucky on or before the 10th day of September, 1814, to serve for the period of six months and continue in actual service for the term of six months and was honorably discharged at Fort Malden, Canada, on the 10th day of March 1815." He added that "he procured certificate of his discharge which was destroyed by fire at the burning of his Mother's house in Nicholas County in the state of Kentucky about the year of 1826." William Sparks signed his application for bounty land by mark.

Records in the Treasury Department proved that William Sparks had served as he had claimed and a warrant was issued him for 80 acres of bounty land.

On March 7, 1856, William Sparks made application for additional bounty land under the new Act of March 3, 1855. He made this application before the justice of the peace named Daniel Van Buskirk in Andrew County, Missouri. He again stated his age as 62, although six years earlier he had also given it as 62. From census record data it appears that he was more nearly correct in 1856 and that he was born about 1794. In his 1856 application, he gave the same information regarding his service as he had in 1850. However, he stated that his certificate of discharge had been destroyed by fire in 1822 instead of "about....1826" as he had stated in 1850. He again signed by mark. Under the Act of 1856, two witnesses were required, and James H. Sparks and William Stephens, both residents of Andrew County, Missouri, signed as witnesses. (There can be little doubt but that James H. Sparks was a son of William Sparks.) This application was also approved and William Sparks was issued a warrant for 80 additional acres of bounty acres of bounty land.

(Editor's Notes: The fact that William Sparks volunteered for service in Bourbon County means that he probably was living in or near Bourbon County in 1814. We know that there were Sparks families in Bourbon County as early as 1786. It is also interesting to note that William Sparks stated that his written discharge had been burned in his mother's house in Nicholas County sometime in the 1820's. Nicholas County adjoins Bourbon County on the north-east.)

From census records we know that this William Sparks was the same William Sparks who married Cordelia Donavan in Fleming County, Kentucky, in 1815. (The marriage bond, probably signed a day or two before the actual marriage, was dated August 8, 1815, just five months after he had been discharged from the Army.) Fleming County adjoins Nicholas County on the east and adjoins Lewis County on the south-west.

By 1850, William Sparks had moved to Lewis County, Kentucky. He was listed on the 1850 census as being 56 years of age whereas in his application for bounty land the same year he stated he was 62 years old. It is probable that the census record is more nearly correct and that he was born about 1794. His birth place according to the 1850 census, was Kentucky. His wife Cordelia (Donavan) Sparks, was listed in 1850 as 56 years of age, so she was probably born about 1794 also. Her birthplace was given as Kentucky. Living with William and Cordelia Sparks in 1850 was Edward F. Sparks, aged 21, and his wife, Sally, with their infant daughter, Mellora. Edward was their son. There was also a Moses Evans, aged 5, living with William and Cordelia in 1850 -- he may have been a grandchild.

There were eleven different Sparks families living in Lewis County, Kentucky, in 1850. How many of them were closely related to William Sparks is not known. (See the Quarterly of September, 1957, Vol. V, No. 3, pp.233-34, for the Sparks families on this census.) From subsequent records, we can be sure that the James H. Sparks and the William A. Sparks living near William Sparks were his sons.

By 1856, William Sparks had moved from Lewis County, Kentucky, to Andrew County, Missouri, for he was a resident of Andrew County when he made his second application for bounty land on March 7, 1856. Apparently he died by 1850, for according to the census of Andrew County for 1860, his wife, Cordelia, now aged 65 years, was living with their son, Edward F. Sparks, who had also moved to Andrew County.

It appears that two sons of William Sparks accompanied him to Missouri, Edward F. and James H. The latter signed as a witness to his father's bounty land application in 1956.

Edward F. Sparks, son of William and Cordelia Sparks, was born about 1829. In 1849 (Lewis County, Kentucky, marriage bond dated January 6, 1849) he was married to Sally Criswell, who was born in Kentucky about 1825. When the 1850 census was taken of Lewis County,Edward and Sally were living with William and Cordelia Sparks -- they had a six-month-old daughter named Mellora. Apparently Sally, wife of Edward died for in 1860 Edward's wife was listed as Mary M. Sparks. Living with Edward F. and Mary M. Sparks in1860 was a Julia Sparks, aged 13, and a Cornelia Sparks, aged 11. These girls could not have been Edward's children and all evidence points to their being Edward's nieces, children of his brother William A. Sparks. William A. Sparks, son of William and Cordelia (Donavan) Sparks, had been married to Mary Meenach in Lewis County in 1847 (marriage bond dated January 8, 1847 -- she was called Polly on the bond and her father's name was given as Alexander Meenach.) On the 1850 census of Lewis County, William A. and Mary (Meeach) Sparks had been listed with Julia A. Sparks, aged 3, Cordelia Sparks, aged 1 year. This Cordelia Sparks, born 1849, died in Andrew County, Missouri, in May 1879. She was the second wife of Capt. Samuel Blair Stafford (born May 3, 1833, in Carroll County, Tennessee, and died May 11, 1906, in Holt County, Missouri); they were married in 1869 and were the parents of five children: (1) William Marion Stafford, born January 1870; (2) Thomas Mahlon Stafford, born about 1872; (3) Emma Jane Stafford, born August 8, 1873; (4) Elsie Stafford, born 1875 or 1876; and (5) John S. Stafford, born July 11, 1877.

Also living with Edward and Mary Sparks in 1860 was a 15-year-old Moses Evans, who had been lining with William and Cordelia Sparks in 1850, then aged 5 years. The "Millon Sparks" aged 10, living with Edward and Mary Sparks in 1860 was surely the Mellora Sparks of 1850, daughter of Edward's first wife. From census records, Edward Sparks appears to have the following children, but which wife was the mother of each cannot be determined with available data.
       Children of Edward F. Sparks:
              (1) Melora (or Millon) Sparks, born 1850 in Kentucky.
              (2) Elizabeth Sparks, born about 1851 in Kentucky.
              (3) Phebe Sparks, born about 1853 in Missouri.
              (4) Catherine Sparks, born about 1856 in Missouri.
              (5) Minerva Sparks, born about 1858 in Missouri.
              (6) Minerva Sparks, born about 1861 in Missouri.
              (7) Anna M. Sparks, born about 1864 in Missouri.
              (8) Charlotte M. Sparks, born about 1864 in Missouri.

An older daughter of Edward F. Sparks apparently married a man named Williams and died, for living with Edward and Mary Sparks in 1880 were three granddaughters (relationships were stated in the 1880 census) named (1) Henrietta Williams, born about 1872; (2) Virginia B. Williams, born about 1874; and (3) Martha E. Williams, born about 1875.

James Harvey Sparks, son of William and Cordelia (Donavan) Sparks, was born in Kentucky about 1826. He was married in Lewis County, Kentucky, in 1848 to Phebe Davis, daughter of George Davis (marriage bond dated January 8, 1848). He and his wife were listed on the 1850 census with one child, Mary A. Sparks, aged one year. They apparently accompanied William and Cordelia to Missouri, for James H. Sparks was a witness to his father's application for bounty land in 1856. By 1860, according to the census of Andrew County, Missouri, James Harvey and Phebe (Davis) Sparks were the parents of the following children:
              (1) Mary A. Sparks, born about 1849 in Kentucky.
              (2) William Sparks, born about 1851 in Kentucky.
              (3) Marie Sparks, born about 1854 in Missouri.
              (4) Lucy Sparks, born about 1857 in Missouri.
              (5) Alice Sparks, born in May, 1860, in Missouri.

Notes for Edward F. Sparks:
This information is from the Sparks Quarterly (Published by The Sparks Family Association):
Edward F. Sparks, son of William and Cordelia (Donavan) Sparks, was born about 1829 in Lewis County, Kentucky. He married (1st) Sarah "Sally" Criswell in Lewis County on March 16, 1849, and (2nd) Mary "Polly" Sparks on March 18, 1856, (NOTE: Andrew County marriage records has this date as February 18, 1856) in Andrew County, Missouri. He served in Co. D, 43rd Regt. Missouri Infantry. File Designations: Inv. Cert. No. 311,813; Wid. Cert. No. 492,345.

On April 6, 1880, Edward F. Sparks, aged 50, a resident of Fillmore, Andrew County, Missouri, applied for an invalid pension. He stated that he had enrolled on August 3, 1864, in Co. D, commanded by Capt. Henry M. Ogle,of the 43rd Regt. Missouri Infantry, and had served until he was discharged at Benton Barracks on June 30, 1865. He was 6 ft. 6 in. tall; he had a fair complexion, dark hair and hazel eyes; and he was a farmer. On or about October 15, 1864, while stationed at Glasgow, Missouri, he contracted typhoid and phenmonia fever which settled in his chest and lungs and from which he had never completely recovered. He had a second attack in January 1865. He was hospitalized at Jefferson City, Mo., from October 20 to November 15, 1864; at Kansas City, Missouri from January 15 to January 30, 1865; and at Independence, Missouri, during the month of March 1865. He appointed J. B. Majors, Savannah, Missouri, as his attorney, W. S. Earls and James C. Hale witnessed him make his mark.

The War Department confirmed Sparks's military service on January 20, 1882 just as Sparks had stated it to be in his application. Records showed Sparks was sick at Jefferson City, Missouri from October 18 to October 31, 1864, and in the hospital at St. Louis, Missouri, on December 5, 1864.

Morgan Hurst, age d53, a resident of Savannah, Missouri, mad an affidavit on March 7, 1883, to support Sparks's claim. He said he had known Sparks for 25 years and that when he entered the service he was a stout, healthy man. After he returned from the service, Sparks had had poor health, with a bad cough, weak chest and lungs, and chronic rheumatism. There were times when Sparks was confined to his bed because of swollen joints and a severe cough.

Invalid Certificate No. 311,813 was issued to Edward F. Sparks and he was placed upon the pension roll. When he died on February 4, 1898, he was receiving a pension of $12 per month.

On March 14, 1898, Mary Sparks, aged 68, a resident of Slusher, Cleveland County, Oklahoma Territory, and widow of Edward F. Sparks, applied for a widow's pension. She stated that she and Sparks had been married in Andrew county, Missouri, on March 18, 1856. There were no children under the age of sixteen years. She appointed Drury Holt, Indianapolis, Indiana, as her attorney. Markers ? C. Hummel and Marvin E. Waldraven witnessed her make her mark.

Mrs. Sparks made an affidavit on September 7, 1899, to supplement her claim. She stated that she had first married William Sparks who had died in Platte County, Missouri, on September 2, 1854. Edward Sparks had also been married previously to Sarah Sparks who had died on May 4, 1852.

Sevillia Roberts, aged 63, a resident of Weston, Missouri, testified on September 23, 1899, that she was well acquainted with Mary Sparks and her first husband William Sparks. He had died in the fall of 1854 and was buried at Weston. Afterwards, Mary Sparks had married Edward F. Sparks and they had moved away.

Mrs. Elizabeth Bolin, age 67, a resident of Atchinson, Kansas, testified on September 7, 1899, that she had known the family of Edward F. Sparks when they were still in Lewis County , Kentucky where Edward Sparks had married Sarah Criswell. She and the Sparks family had come to Missouri on the same boat in the fall of 1852 and had settled in Platte County. She said she was with the Sparks family when Sally had died on May 4, 1853.

Widow's Certificate No. 492,345 was issued to Mary Sparks and she was placed upon the pension roll. When she died on March 22, 1912, she was receiving a pension of $12 per month.

(Editor's Note: Edward F. Sparks was a son of William and Cordelia (Donavan) Sparks of Lewis County, Kentucky, and Andrew County, Missouri. See pages 928-930 of the September 1965 issue of THE QUARTERLY, Whole No. 51, for further details of this family.)

Notes for Cordelia F. Sparks:
Note from Monica Eshelman, genealogist, Andrew County, Missouri:
There is a possible 6th child for Samuel Stafford and Cordelia Sparks. The 1880 Mortality Schedule (connected with the 1880 Andrew County, Missouri census) lists a Walter Sparks, died July 1879, aged 5 months, parents born Tennessee and Kentucky. Since Samuel and Cordelia are the only Staffords in the census who match those birthplaces, I have guessed that Walter might have been their child (possibly connected to the death of his mother?)

Notes for Captain Samuel Blair Stafford:
Samuel is listed as Samuel B. Stanford in the Andrew County, Missouri marriage records book. Marriage record #2690.

Notes for Victor Crawford Forister, Jr.:
Poem written by Ruby Jo Gilley to her daughter, Jimmy Gilley Forister, when she found out Jimmy and Victor, Sr. were going to have a baby after 18 years of marriage.

                     Baby's Version

               Hello Mom and Dad
               I'm your little Boy.
               God sent me here
               to live with you
And be your pride and joy.

So many years you prayed for me,
               Never losing faith or love,
               So one day, God remembered
And in a calm voice, He said,
               "Thy will be done,
And for thy love and faith in Me,
               Ye shall have a son."
So Mother Dear, when you and Dad
Thank God for mr each day,
Tell Him, I thank Him too
For a nice Mom and Dad like you.

This verse was put into the Memory Folder at Victor, Jr.'s funeral, held September 5, 1998 at Havenbrook Funeral Home, Norman, Oklahoma, 10:00 a.m.

Eulogy written by Mary Wade Hayes with help from everyone:

IN HONOR OF VICTOR FORISTER

Victor became part of our family on January 28, 1983, when he married our sister Cathy. Since he was an only child, our large family of seven girls -- complete with brothers-in-law and many children -- was quite an experience for him...just as it was for all the other brothers-in-law. Vic loved it -- and jumped right in.

As a young man Victor loved and played all different sports, especially golf and skiing. But as his myotonic dystrophy progressed, ne became a great spectator...and everyone who knew Vic knew he loved OU football. He was a #1 fan who rarely missed a game.

One thing Vic loved to play was dominos. He could go over to Mother and Woody's and enjoy a good game... and he did... lots of times. Or occasionally he liked Cathy to fix dinner and invite them to come to their house to play. He and Woody loved dominos.

Vic was basically a quiet person, but once you got to know him -- he loved conversation. Recently he was eagerly learning about computers, and he liked to share with us what he knew.

Chris reminded us about the way Vic was fascinated with the weather. They both agreed Victor should have been a meteorologist --- or maybe a storm-chaser! When the beep...beep...beep...came on the television, he had the National Weather Service programmed on speed-dial so he could keep up with severe weather in our area! Chris loved hearing Vic's excitement and enthusiasm as he kept everyone posted with all the details. Chris was 12 when Victor and Cathy married, and they became not only father - son...but also good friends.

With their combined family, Vic now had 2 cute daughters: Marla and Lori. As a little girl, Marla was the apple of her daddy's eye. She really loved the swimming pool, and Vic spent hours in their pool --- first teaching Marla to swim -- and then letting her jump in to him, time after time...spalsh after splash! Their time together was very special to Victor.

When Lori recently married Joe, Vis was so excited about the wedding! He loved festivities and was involved in all the planning, the decorating, and the celebration! Although his health had been declining, his constant desire was to be able to join the fun at Lori's wedding. Thankfully, Lori made it special for Victor and it was obvious he enjoyed every minute...especially their wedding dance together!

During the wedding activities -- as with many others -- Vic's friend Joel helped him handle some of the physical challenges so he could reserve his energy. Recently they had attended the big Norman Invasion, the Pre-Season NFL game at OU. Independence was important to Victor, and we all tried to help him maintain as much as possible.

Vic was like a country boy living in the city! He and Lori shared a special bond because of their mutual love of animals. Special memories were built just traipsing out in the fields -- they both loved the outdoors...they even enjoyed just going to the live-stock auctions. So..we can't forget man's best friend: Vic's dog: Rocky and Sassy (a rotwiller and a snouzer) were truly 2 of his best friends. Vic loved his dogs...and they loved him, and were always near him -- even to the end.

Ephesians 6:2 says "Honor thy father and mother which is the first commandment with promise, that it may be well with thee."

It must have been well with Victor. He loved and honored his parents, and was deeply saddened when his father died. He and his mother, Jimmie, had a special relationship and shared many mutual interests. Jimmie always knew Victor was there for her, especially when she needed him to take her on trips to Texas --- a favorite state with lots of family they both enjoyed. They both loved antiques, and they especially loved to visit their peaceful place at Wimberly. Enjoying rest and relaxation, Victor really appreciated the natural setting and the opportunity to watch and feed the many deer. Victor and Jimmie traveled many miles together, which must have been special times for a mother and her son. Honor your mother. Victor honored his mother.

And Cathy. How Victor loved you Cathy! Just talking about you still made his eyes light up! He always told us: "all the girls are pretty --- but Cathy is the prettiest of all!" We'd tease and harass him, but we were glad he thought that!

He thought you were the best cook, too Cathy! And we all know he enjoyed "good food!" He was convinced you should market your famous lasagna!

He was totally impressed with your talents. Your floral arrangements always had your special touch! And he always said you could make anything look beautiful ---- remember how he would say no one wanted to open presents you wrapped because they were wrapped so beautifully!

And, speaking of presents: Vic delighted in having the family Christmas party at his and Cathy's home. He loved helping decorate every inch of the house. He loved the hustle and bustle of kids all around! Remember how he loved lots...and lots...and lots...of lights on the tree ---- and how he could sit for hours and watch them twinkle!

Exchanging gifts for the names we had drawn was always fun --- he was so anxious to see who had his name! And he joined right in when we all sang Christmas songs! In fact, we had to depend on Vic to lead us sometimes ---- he was always the "only" one who could remember allthe words and the order of "The Twelve Days of Christmas!" And when Vic led our Christmas blessing, he sincerely thanked God for all his family.

Victor taught Cathy to slow down and appreciate life. And Cathy taught Victor to love people and give of himself. Their home was always open, as were their hearts. Together they have helped many people. We especially remember when they took in a young single mom with 5 little children. Vic quickly became a self-appointed foster-father..and the children adored him. Whether they had a little or a lot, Cathy and Victor were willing to share.

When we talked about heaven, we could appreciate Victor's everlasting love for you, Cathy, when he reminded you that he definitely wanted you to be in "his" mansion.

Even with his declining health, his faith in God...and his faith in Cathy...never wavered. For richer -- for poorer -- In sickness and in health... Through it all --- Victor loved Cathy!

We will miss Vic. He was an important part of our family and our lives. We loved Victor Forister.
