James Mullen was born in 1834. The Lexington City Directories indicate that his photography business was on 52 E. Main in 1867, 56 E Main St. in 1875-76, 5 W Main in 1877-78 and 1881-1882 and on 5 & 7 W Main in 1898-1899. I did find articles and advertisements which indicate he moved from 5 W Main St. to 311 W. Main sometime between 1900 and 1904.

R.J.C. Carpenter had a studio called Carpenter & McCann Photograph Studio located on Main St. located over Tingle & Thompson’s Harness Store in 1864-65. He was in business with EE McCann who lived in Paris, KY. I couldn’t find Carpenter in any other city directory.

Cassius Jones Young (C.J.) was born in 1847/48 and listed as a photographer in the 1880 census of Lexington. The 1870 census shows him as an “artist”. The 1875-76 City Directory lists him as a photographer (Young’s Gallery) at 53 ˝ E. Main. The city directory also lists him in 1881-1882 as a photographer living on Maxwell St. It doesn’t give his business address. Young was not listed as a photographer in the 1898-1899 directory.

I hope that info helps!
