You can obtain a little more information on Jailer William Lucas by accessing the website "the fallen officer's memorial" You are exactly correct, he did give his life in an attempt to protect his prisoner, who happened to be an african american. The date was July 16, 1884. I currently hold the office that Mr. Lucas did some 125 years ago.
