The Three (or Four) Wives of L.R. Gay 1806-1876 Mercer County, MO

Lewis Russell Gay was born about 1806 in Clay County, KY.

Lewis Russell Gay married Mary Rice on 25 February, 1826 in Clay Co, KY. Her mother was Rebecca and bondsman was James Casaga.

Are there any Rice records that name Mary Gay?

The 1830 will of Henry Gay states that Russel lives on the upper plantation which son, Henry, Jr., will inherit. Russel received two heifers to be worth 11 dollars.

The 1830 census of Perry Co, KY shows Russel Gay aged 20-30, wife 20-30, and a son under 5.

Lewis Russell Gay moved to North-central Missouri before 1850, and probably before 1840. He has not been located on the 1840 census in any state.

When did Lewis Russell move to Harrison/Mercer Cos, MO?

Lucinda Gay, wife of L.R., died on 15 Mar, 1846 and is buried in Chestnut Cemetery, Mercer Co, MO. Is this Lucinda a second wife to Lewis or is this an additional name for Mary Rice? No other marriages can be located, but no records show Mary Rice with the name Lucinda or initial L. No death of Mary is known, either.

One researcher suggested that Lucinda was a Cornett, but I find no evidence to suggest this is true.

Lewis Russell Gay then married Mrs. Marian (Mary) Munns on 8 April, 1847 in Daviess Co, MO. She was probably the wife of James Muns listed in the 1840 Daviess Co, MO census in the vicinity of Eli Kash and John and William Williams, relatives of the Gays. The Muns may have been from Whitley Co, KY, as a James Muns appears in that county in earlier censuses.

Lewis Russell Gay married Priscilla Gibson Brown Deweese after 1850, but before 1860.

My question concerns the first and second wives. I have no record of Mary being called Lucinda, and only the tombstone naming Lucinda. Could they be the same woman? If not, where did L.R. marry Lucinda and what is her maiden name?

The birth years of the children show some gaps where a wife’s death and a subsequent marriage could’ve taken place.

John b. 1827
Joanna b. 1829
Joseph b. 1832
Gap in years could point to another marriage.
Matilda b. 1836
Lewis R. Jr. b. 1838
       Children’s birthplaces changes to MO
Henry E. b. 1842 MO
Hiram b. 1844 MO
Children b. after marriage to Mary Munns
Sarah b. 1847
Anna b. 1851
Children b. after marriage to Priscilla Gibson
James N. b. 1860
William Beady Grant b. 1864
Martha E. b. 1861

Lewis Russell Gay died October 1876 in Mercer County, Missouri.
