According to information submitted by his daughter, Gail Downer McCullough,

James Garnett Downer (23 Nov 1915 - 9 Dec 1942)

graduated from the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, University of Illinois, 1938

"served with the 126th Infantry Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army. He entered the service from Kentucky and was killed in New Guinea. He is buried at Manila American Cemetery, Manila, Philippines. Lt. Downer earned the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart."
