Slave Burials at Old Mt Gilead Methodist Cemetery, Carthage
Posted by: Dann Woellert (ID *****8858) Date: April 06, 2011 at 10:40:23

I have ancestors buried in the Old Mt. Gilead Methodist Cemetery, and have record from a will that their bonded servants are also buried there, and have seen reference that the slaves were buried in another section of the old cemetery in mainly unmarked graves.

I was also told when visitng the Mt Gilead Church that someone in Carthage has the old burial register that notes slave burials.

I am researching slave emancipations and slave genealogy in the Carthage area, particularly the family of slaves owned by the Elijah Herndon and extended family.

Anyone who might have any information would be greatly appreciated
