Thanks, Martha and Jerry. So now I know that John didn't marry Jane until after the 1860 census but he must have been around because Eva Kate Methven was born 2 January 1861! I've discovered that John came alone to America, arriving in New York on the Harmonia in 1850. His first wife,Elizabeth, and five children were still back with her mother at Avondale, Lanarkshire (outside Glasgow). Elizabeth died in March 1855 in Covington. The John Methven who was buried in Covington in 1863 was the eldest child of John and Elizabeth. I found the Covington Journal in digital format on the Library Web site. The account of John's wife's death was reported March 10, 1855 but the name was "Melville". The next week reported it as Methven and that John was charged. The week after that it reported that "the Commonwealth's Attorney, convinced that the charge could not be sustained, entered a nolle prosequi." Interesting things. Thanks for your help.
