According to census and military records, my gr gr grandfather and three of his brothers were born in Caldwell County, Kentucky circa 1820 and 1828. They moved to the Pope County-Massac County area in Illinois sometime in the 1840s. They are:

James S. Johnston, b. c. 1820, d. after 1880
Thomas (S. ?) Johnston, b. c. 1821, d. October 4, 1862
John F. Johnston, b. c. 1825, d. 1892
Andrew J. Johnston, b. c. 1828, d. 1870-1880

I found a John Johnston in the 1830 census for Church Township, Caldwell Co., KY with four sons whose ages are consistent with MY four Johnston men.

In the 1850 census for Pope County a Rebecca Jo(h)nston, age 59, b in Kentucky was living with Thomas Jo(h)nston. She could be the mother of James S. Thomas (S. ?), John F. and Andrew J.

Information about any of these Johnstons will be appreciated. I am also willing to share information.
