Seeking Cotten/Cotton family reported as early settlers in Caldwell Co KY. My g g grandfather Joab Cotten was reported born in Caldwell Co KY--very sketchy information and no documentation of KY family.
Joseph Abner “Joab” Cotten and Sarah Jane Walls:
Joseph born 1803 in Caldwell Co KY, died in 1879 in Milam Co TX.
Sarah Jane Walls born in Kentucky, died in 1890 in Milam Co.
Joab's parents: Joseph Abner Cotten born 1771 Berdie Co North Carolina Died 1853 in Caldwell co Kentucky and Mother Elizabeth Pickett born 1779 Kentucky. Family story is that Joab’s father moved family to Mississippi. Then Joab returned to KY to marry Sarah, before moving to AK, LA and TX.
Sarah’s parents: Newton Smith and Nancy Elizabeth “Lavina” (Dillard) Smith Walls (b. 1786 Carthage, Smith Co TN d. 1849 Lincoln Co KY). After Mr. Smith died, she remarried in 1808 in Lincoln Co KY. (Lavina is another name for Elizabeth) Lavina’s uncle John Henry Dillard died at the Alamo.
Sarah was raised by her step-father Jesse Walls (b. 9-14-1785 Lincoln Co KY d. 1849 Lincoln Co KY and adopted his name. Sarah’s step father Jesse’s parents were Isaac Suttle Walls (b. 1760 KY?) and Fannie Elizabeth (Carter) Walls (b. 1765 d. 1788 KY), who married in 1783, and grandparentss were Jacob Walls (b. 1735 Mass. d. 1795 KY) and Laura Elizabeth Walls (b. 1740 Mass d. 1826 KY), who married 1759 in Mass.
Her maternal grandparents may have been: William Dillard (b. 1755 Halifax NC d. 1845 Williamson TN) and Sarah Dillard (b 1760 NC d. 1850 Caldwell Co KY). No known siblings for Lavina other than John Henry Dillard.
