The late Peter Cavanaugh was born in the county of Sligo, Ireland, in 1820, came to New York at 19, and was married three years after. He constructed a number of houses in Williamsburg and came to California in 1858. He commenced business in Carson (Carson City, Nv.) in 1860, built the pavilion and in 1869 he started building the State Capitol. Following plans to the letter, he lost several thousand dollars. He had a stroke and had his wants for 11 years were ministered to by his only unmarried daughter, aided by two sons, Col. Peter and Charles. She was ever present in her father's sick chamber.
