Typhoid Fever or Cholera--early 1870s

Can anyone tell me about a typhoid fever outbreak in the early 1870s in Butler Co? I know that there was a cholera outbreak but did not see my family's name (Smith or Hope) listed among dead. I have many relatives who suddenly died/disappeared during this time. And on the back of a recently found picture, it says that my ggg-grandmother had her hair cut short like a boys due to typhoid fever. She died 1871-1872. Her brother and father died during this time too.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Jen
