Sorry. I hit Send before intended. On the 1850 census, if the James Matthews living next to John N. Matthews, is a son of John and Elizabeth, then the census states that James Matthews was born in Tennessee. This (if accurate) tells you the family lived in Tennessee at least for a while before coming to Kentucky. James Matthews is age 41 in the 1850 census, making his birth about 1809 in Tennessee. William, another probable son, was born in Kentucky about 1818 in Kentucky, so the family was in Kentucky by then. Anderson Matthews states he was born in Kentucky, age 36, so born about 1814 in Kentucky. So, it's possible to identify a loose timeline that the family may have been in Tennessee about 1809-1810, but in Kentucky by 1814. Another researcher at Ancestry.com states that John Nelson Matthews was born at Amherst Co., Virginia, 20 Oct 1777, and died 3 Oct 1865 in Barren Co., Kentucky. Hope this helps you get started.
