Charlotte: Though not related, I'll try to help you. You'll first need to identify some basic info. (a) Barren County was formed in 1798, from parts of Warren County. So if your John Matthews was in the county in 1800, he was one of the very early settlers. At the free Rootsweb or USGenWeb sites for Barren County, there is a land record for a John Matthews in Barren County filed as early as June 1800. It was unusual for un-married men to apply for land grants, so you might guess that this is your John Mathews and he was married by June 1800. Of course, it will all need to be validated. A man named John N. Matthews filed for a land grant in Barren County in June 1830; this is probably your guy.
At the same time, there were several ANDERSON heads of household filing for land grants in the same county. That's good to know.
The Elizabeth ANDERSON being wife of John Matthews seems likely. One of their probable sons, named on the 1850 census adjacent to them in Barren County is named Anderson Matthews. It's probable his mother was an Anderson, but you'll need documentation. This is a strong clue, but not proof.
The 1850 census states that John N. Mathews was born about 1777 in Virginia, and Elizabeth was also born in Virginia. He was, therefore, born about the beginning of the Revolutionary War, which is good to know for future research.
