Forkland Community Center in Southwestern Boyle County, Kentucky, has received a grant from the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission to publish a book, Roots, Trunks, & Branches—Abraham Lincoln's Connections to the Forkland Community. Lucey Shipley Hanks Sparrow, the maternal grandmother of Abraham Lincoln, settled in the Forkland area with her second husband, Henry Sparrow, and raised eight children. In this book we intend to tell the story of the Sparrows, their descendants, and related families. To do a thorough job, we need input from everyone who can tell us more about these families. These families include Shipley, Berry, Mitchell, Ingram, Edwards and Whitehouse.
We would be grateful for any material that you can provide to aid this project, and we have two specific requests (in addition to genealogical material):
1. We will be including a chapter on deceased Sparrow descendants and deceased members of related families from Henry and Lucey's grandchildren to present generations. We are looking for interesting stories illustrating where and how they lived. We also seek photos, documents, newspaper clippings, etc. Please tell us the stories in your own words, which we will edit as necessary. We are not only looking for famous deeds or heroic acts, but would like to include interesting stories that have been passed down. We particularly need information on the Sparrow families and their descendants that moved to Anderson, Spencer, Nelson, Washington, and Jefferson Counties, KY. We appreciate all submissions, but we can't guarantee publication.
2. We also plan to publish as many short narrative biographies, with photos when possible, of current generations as we can. These biographies should be stories with information on the subjects' interests, talents, etc. If you want to include how you are related to the Sparrows, please do so. If we have too many submissions to fit in the book, we will put the extras on a CD, which will include genealogical information as well. Please ask all of your Sparrow-related relatives to send information about themselves!
We hope to publish Roots, Trunk, & Branches in time for our 37th Annual Forkland Heritage Festival & Revue on October 10 & 11, 2008. The Festival's theme this year is (surprise!) Roots, Trunk, & Branches: Abraham Lincoln's Connections to the Forkland Community, so we urge all Sparrow related families to come. If you would like to be mailed a Festival brochure, please request one at: firstname.lastname@example.org. To make sure we meet our publishing deadline, we need to receive your stories and biographies by June 21, 2008. Please don't put it off! Please mail all stories, biographies, photos, and other materials to Shirley Sheperson, 312 Venetian Way, Danville, KY 40422 or e-mail any stories, biographies, etc. (photos should be in JPG format) to: Brenda Edwards at email@example.com. If you need any of the materials you send us to be returned to you, PLEASE be sure to include a self-addressed envelope!! Many, many thanks for your help! Forkland Book Committee.
