Kuster

My grandfather, grandson of Joseph Custer/Kuster told my sister that our name was originally spelled Kuster. My own research has documented our family through both Custard and Custer. We know our ancester, Joseph Custer, was b. c1800, and d. before 08 Apr 1837. We are proven to c1800. Knowing the line originally was spelled Kuster has given us problems in documenting my own line.
Pointers are to Emanuel Custer/Kuster and Anne Miller, whose first wife d. 15 October 1799. Her youngest child [Charlotte Custer] was b. Elk Lick Twp., Somerset Co., PA, 04 March 1798.

15 October 1799, mother died. Muhlenberg gives marriage at Philadelphia Co., PA. 17 February 1778.
Dictionary of American Biography, V. 5, Custer - Paternal great grandfather was a Hessian officer named Kuster who surrendered with Burgoyne, settled in PA then moved to MD.

My father's sister also traced to same document and was also searching for closure to ancesteral line. Thanks in advance for any help you can extend to my iffy problem.
