Yes. Frank Kurek came to the US by himself in the 1920's, supposedly chased-off by the fascists with whom he refused to deal. He settled in Buffalo, NY, and changed his name to Kurch, supposedly because the fascists back in Germany had some ties to the unions in the US and he had trouble finding work.

He may have gone to college in Karlsruhe and studied as an architect.
