Herman Berner and Ellen Kurtz were married 20 Jul 1865 in Hamilton Co., OH. The 1870 census for Cincinnati shows that Herman was age 35, born in Prussia, and a saloon keeper; Helen [Ellen] was 25 and born in Baden; Ferdinand, age 4, and Frank, age 3, were both born in OH; Rose, age 18, was born in Baden. The 1878 city directory for Cincinnati lists Ellen Berner as a saloon keeper at 349 W. 5th Street and lists Wm. Hazard as a roomer at 349 W. 5th Street. The 1880 census for Cincinnati lists at 425 W. 5th Street: William Hazard, age 36; Ellen, age 35, born Baden; Ben, age 14, and Frank, age 3, both born OH. A 1903 marriage record for Benjamin Hazard says that he was the son of William Hazard and Ellen Kurtz. I think that Benjamin was the stepson of William Hazard and the son of Herman Berner and Ellen Kurtz. Benjamin continued to use the name Hazard throughout his life and his children - Walter, Elmer, and Lillie - were named Hazard. Does anyone know the parents of Ellen Kurtz or Herman Berner?
