My family's branch of Kunes came from Domazlice area (village called Kolovec)in Bohemia but settled in Nebraska after immigrating in 1903.
Anna EGR (b1847) married Jakub KUNES (b1840) in Bohemia and had 10 children. Jakub died in 1892 and the widow and some of her children came to the U.S.
The Kunes name in the Czech language has a mark over the "s" that makes the pronunciation "Kunesh" so families might have changed it to sound the same in English. As far as the meaning of the name, I believe it has something to do with horses, as in a person who works with horses.
Hope this helps!
