Our family changed its name from Kummerer to Kummer during the war. I assume this was WWI to make it sound less German. During the 17 and 1800's there were many Kummerers in the PA area. Some moved to Ohio and Illinois in later years when land became available.

Many people in the 1700 and 1800 did not know how to write their names and the census takers, preachers etc, just wrote the names out as they though it should be spelled. So there may be a connection.
