Just found this surname forum today. My maternal grandmother is a Kuka, Frances Kuka, daughter of Peter Kuka (b. 1869) and Pauline Sura (sp?) b. 1872, all of the Watertown/Winsted Minnesota area.

Have very hazy information on the immigration of the Kuka family to the states. Family tradition has it that the name originally was something like Kukaminsky[e], with an extra syllable pronounced at the [e] but no one recalls what that syllable was. Supposedly the family's from E. Prussia in the area currently split between Poland and Russia/Belarus. Don't have a place name; in files at home.

Family was apparently well educated, even as farmers in Minnesota. Spoke Polish obviously, but also fluent with German and Ukrainian. Great grandfather played fluent violin and read the NY Times and two foreign newspapers every day after retirement to Watertown, MN.

Would like to work with anyone who thinks they've got related branches to southern Minnesota KUKA family. Have access to Federal Records Center here in Denver (census data, source docs, etc.).

Emails: tgerrells@hotmail.com (mil), tegerrells@aol.com (home), tim@intellocity.com (work).

Tim Gerrells
