I've given up searching for this family because there are just too many spellings used -- often three or four for the same individual. Maybe someone else can connect to this family through the information provided in the obits.

The Lafayette Morning Journal

DR. J. P. KOONSE

The death of Dr. J. P. Koonse occurred at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon at his home, 1114 North Twelfth Street. In the sunshine of a most beautiful day, with all Nature smiling a promise of spring there passed from this life into one of spring eternal, a gentle and most kindly spirit. Those who are left to mourn cannot but find comfort that he went in the sunshine that he so loved and which was symbolical of his gentle, quiet, sunny life. With a mind broad and cultured, a nature so charitable and kindly that to know him was a pleasure and to have him counted his friend an honor indeed. Dr. Koonse was born in Ohio 68 years ago, but had spent the greater portion of his life in Lafayette. He was a highly educated man and a fine physician. He was a noted specialist, having patients from all parts of the country who became greatly attached to him during their stay. He was truly one of Nature’s noblemen what the word gentleman implies. He is survived by a widow, one daughter, Mrs. E. E. Quivey, and a son, Harry. To the grief of these dear ones is added the sorrow of countless friends who grieve with them in this their hour of deepest loss. Dr. Koonse’s death was the result of an accident last Thanksgiving. He struck his cheek against a screen door. This injury caused the bone to decay, causing his death. Dr. Koonse was a member of the Tippecanoe Lodge No. 55, I.O.O.F., and had affiliated with that order for years. The funeral will be conducted from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. Dr. Horace G. Ogden, of Louisville will officiate and the interment will be made in Greenbush cemetery.

Sherman County Times

The following account of the death of Dr. J. P. Koonse, a brother of Mrs. Simpson Criss and Mrs. Haney of this city, is taken from the Lafayette, Indiana, Daily Courier: "The funeral of Dr. J. P. Koonse was conducted from the family residence 1114 North Twelfth street, at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon and was largely attended. The services were beautiful and impressive, a fitting tribute to one so universally admired and beloved. Rev. Horace G. Ogden, pastor of the Louisville Methodist church, and a close friend of the deceased and family officiated. Miss Bertha Ridgely beautifully sang "Abide with me" and "Jesus, Lover of my Soul."

Sarah Catherine Haney

After a long spell of sickness, Grandma Haney was called to her reward. She had been a faithful sufferer, being confined to her bed almost constantly for the past few years, she was relieved of her earthly troubles, after spending a long and successful life among us.

Sarah Catherine Haney was born in Liverpool, Columbia County Ohio, May 15, 1831 and died January 28, 1913, being at the time of her death, almost 82 years old.

She was married to Captain David Haney, at Wellsville, Ohio. Aug. 19, 1851, and lived at that place a short time, and moving from there to Pittsburgh, and later to St. Louis, Missouri. At the later place they lived 20 years. Her husband died December 21, 1879. Two children, one daughter and one son were born to this union. Both of her children have long proceded [sic] their mother to the great beyond. Mrs. Haney came to Sherman County 1880 and has lived with Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Conger, Mrs. Conger being the granddaughter of Mrs. Haney. She leaves to mourn her loss one sister, Mrs. Naoma [sic] Criss, one grandchild, Mrs. J.W. Conger and three grand children, the children of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Conger, and six brothers.

The deceased united with the Methodist church at the age of 20 years and has remained a member through the balance of her life. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church, Wednesday afternoon, Dr. D.A. Leeper being in charge and the remains were laid to rest in the Conger lot, in the Evergreen cemetery. It was her expressed wish that she be buried here. Grandma Haney was sick about four years, but all this time, she had the best of care and those who ministered to her earthly wants, in her helpless condition all this time are entitled to strong commendation. The time for the final seen [sic] had arrived, and her departure to the eternal world was a great relief to the sufferer.

Their residence has been in this vicinity ever since.

Mr. Criss died in 1907, since which time she has made her home with her son Simpson. Mrs. Criss lived to a ripe old age and her final taking off was merely the result of long years of toil and devotion to her loved ones.

Mrs. Criss reared a large family. In her youth she united with the United Brethern church but upon her coming to Loup City, there being no church of her own faith here, she joined the Methodist church of which she remained a member to the time of her death.
