Looking for information on spelling change to KULMAN

Hello, 1st time poster

I was told that when my grandfather came to North America he changed the spelling of our name from Kuhlman(n) to Kulman.

I've never been able to find any information about the Ku(h)lman(n) side of the family other than my Great Grandfather Jonathan Kulman was the one who suposedly changed the name. He resided in Brandon Manitoba, Canada and so has the rest of our family ever since.

Does anyone have any information on this surname change?
