Thank you for your detailed response.
The Sarah J. McDaniel referenced in the 1880 census, if truly aged 55 as reported, would have been born ca. 1825 and I cannot account for this individual at this time. There are several Sara/Sarah’s in this McDaniel branch however there is only one who comes close to the ca. 1825 time frame. This was Sarah J. SHORTT b. 1828 who was married to James W. McDaniel.
Sarah, identified as "mother-in-law", probably to Charlie Saferite, implies she was the mother of Charles Saferite’s wife, Susan McDaniel. According to Floie Frazier’s "Saferite/Saferight Tree," Susan was listed as "Sudie" in the census prior to 1880. Other McDaniel genealogies involving this line list her only as Susan. I cannot account for Susan’s parents or her relationship to my McDaniel branch except through Charlie Saferite. Susan and Sara J. may be as yet unexplored limbs to my McDaniel tree.
Alfred J. McDaniel was married to Ettie B. Saferite, sister to Charles Saferight thus making Alfred J. Charlies brother-in-law as listed in the 1880 census and the age of 18 fits in with his year of birth 1861. It is odd that he is listed as Charlie’s brother-in-law because my records indicate that Alfred and Ettie were not married until September 1883. Stella Sarah McDANIEL Leavitt, their daughter, recorded the marriage information in her address book. The same information comes by way of correspondence with a great-granddaughter. Anyway, I believe this to be my Alfred Joseph Roger McDaniel.
Susan and Sarah will need more research. Now if I could only get past Alfred McDaniel b. 1784 Va. d. 1860-1870 Va. m. Nancy Goodwin b. 1798 Va. d. 1860-1870 Va., grandparents to the Alfred J. McDaniel you cited in the 1880 KS census!
