States: Kansas: Sumner
I am interested in any stories, photos, documents, etc., that might relate to my family who lived in Sumner County, KS. I have recently received the 1880 census data from a very kind person.
My great-grandparents were Samuel Coan Bartlett and Mary Catherine Wheeler Bartlett, who settled on a farm 7 miles southwest of Wellington, KS, in the mid to late 1870's. Their son Walter, who became a doctor and started the Bartlett Arboretum in Belle Plaine, KS, was born in MO in 1875. My grandfather was Samuel E. Bartlett, born 1882, in Sumner County, graduated from Sumner County High School in Wellington, as apparently did his sisters Pearl and Stacy Bartlett. These two sisters never married and lived their adult lives in Wellington. A brother, Oscar, I believe was a farmer in Sumner County and died fairly young. Samuel went to KU and earned his law degree. After graduation, he settled in Ellsworth County, where my father, Samuel Brewster Bartlett, was born in 1913.
I would love to hear from anyone who might share some stories or other information with me about this family. Thank you very much.
