According to the 1900 census, Rachel & Jonathan appear to have been divorced after 6 years of marriage (see Jonathan's census info). Rachel uses her maiden name yet claims herself widowed; Jonathan claims himself divorced. 1900 US Census, KS, Shawnee, Topeka, ED 151, Sheet 6B 710[?] Jefferson St. COON, Rachel, head, w, f, Oct 1857, 42, widowed, bore 0 children/0 living, OH PA PA, no occupation, own home free of mortgage --Charlie, Boarder, w, m, Nov 1887, 12, single, KS OH OH, at school SYLVANUS, Joshua, boarder, w, m, Oct 18??, age?, single, OH PA PA, hack driver JAMES, Marimel?, servant, w, f, ????, 28, single, IL KY KY, day laborer ========== 1900 US Census, KS, Shawnee, Topeka, ED 158, Sheet 1A 513 Kansas Avenue RICHMOND, Jonathan, head, w, m, March 1842, 58, Divorced, married 6 years, MI NY VT, Retired ========= This all puts the two marriage licenses (1877 & 1883) in a new light -- perhaps they had a difficult time getting along. The good news is that you probably can procure divorce records from Shawnee County and learn more. Since Charlie has the same surname, he must be a nephew. I wonder why he is listed as a "boarder" rather than as a family member. In the 1870 census I notice Rachel's youngest brother's name as Joshua rather than John. I'm not sure any of John RICHMONDs (from CA Death Index) are the people you're seeking: Last name, first name, age, county of death, date of death, state record number Richmond, JOHN, 60, Los Angeles Co., April 21, 1911, 10697 Richmond, JOHNTHOM, 69, Los Angeles Co., March 24, 1911, 7183 I don't see Jonathan indexed in California in 1910 census; however, by that time he was about 68 years old and perhaps was visiting/living with a son or daughter, and therefore would not show up in the index. Have you contacted the Topeka Genealogical Society for assistance? THey are very helpful with death index, burial records, contact with cemeteries, obituaries, etc. Do you have obits for Rachel's apparent parents/siblings? Obits often mention full name and place of residence of the survivors. This could help you determine whether Rachel had children with Jonathan or remarried after his death, and where she lived at various points. Notify Administrator about this message?
